Ara's Creative Bio

My story

I grew up in a creative household where I was taught to sew, knit, crochet and embroider by both my mum and my nana. I would fill the lounge and kitchen table with creative projects that went on for weeks at a time and tie dye cotton sheets to make outfits for myself and my friends.

I graduated with a Diploma in Textile Design from the Wellington School of Design and went on to work in the Textile Industry. In the early 90’s I designed and produced a range of hand printed children’s wear. During this process, I realised that the aspect that I was most passionate about was creating the original drawing/design to be printed on the fabric.

From here I developed a passion for creating detailed pencil sketches. There was always a yearning to paint on canvas but it wasn't until after the birth of my second son that I had the courage to try. I then went on to develop my skills in fine art and have sold hundreds of works through exhibitions, galleries, commissions and private sales. I joined Holtom’s Art Studios in 2021.

I passionately believe in the healing power of creativity and in 2019 I studied and became a certified teacher in Intentional Creativity. This is a guided creative process that taps into our internal world to bring about awareness and healing. I offer Intentional Creativity workshops and sessions.

I also have the privilege to be co-ordinator and creative director at Te Ara Korowai where members have the opportunity to enhance their wellness through a diverse creative programme.
